Lord Gort does her bit in the war effort. As she travels about England, and then the Continent, searching for her person, she brings emotional and material benefits to all she stays with. Easing the impact of loss, bringing luck, noticing a change in the plane's engine, leading the horses and carts out of the Coventry fire...She does good, and finally receives her reward. It's a heartening book, as well as teaching about England and the English during the German blitz.
Summary: This story follows a female, black cat named Lord Gort as she goes on an adventure through World War 2 England to find her owner. Along the way she stays with several different families experiencing all of their unique hardships they face in the war. Eventually, she is reunited with him after a very long journey.

Personal Reaction: I found this book accidentally in one of the gift shops in London, and I fell in love with it almost immediately. My father is a military historian, and his favorite time period is World War 2 so I have been surrounded by it my whole life. Also, I am really fond of cats.

Extensions:
1) I would teach the children about what it was like for the people in England during this time.
2) I would have the show more children try to write a story in a perspective of a cat or a dog. show less
Lord Gort is a cat. Separated from her person, she sets out to find him and in the process meets a number of different people on different situations. Against this backdrop we have a set of short stories, all connected by the cat, and all revealing so much about war time Britain. Westall has researched the events well and describes actual war time events, such as the bombing of Coventry, to create a novel that transports the reader into a bygone era. This is a very good piece of writing, rich in historical detail.
No, this book isn't about a cat who can think or talk. It is more about the people who this cat come in contact with. Beautifully written, this book talks of the pains of war, the emotions of its characters, and a cat who is just trying to get home. This is a must read for anyone who enjoys a smoothly paced book with a wonderful plot.
Lord Gort, a wrongly named female cat, journeys towards her master, whose presence she can sense, leaving a legacy of hope, fulfilment and satisfaction to many whose paths she crosses. A powerful portrayal of embattled England, with well-defined characters
2772 Blitzcat, by Robert Westall (read 9 Aug 1995) This tells of a black cat in England in World War II. She has amazing adventures, including going out of a plane with a man who parachutes into France. and coming thru Spain and Portugal and finally finding her master again--a scene powerful in its poignancy. The book has coarse language and gratuitous references to adultery--but when the story concentrates on the cat--Lord Gort--it is entrancing. And it ends happily. An truly entrancing read, all in all.

in Blitzcat there is a cat who just wants to get home. but this book is not only about the cat, its about people who are suffering during World War 2 too. the cat, Lord Gort, runs away from her new home to get back to her old house. on the way there she is picked up by many strangers and they all have different stories that they are living. each person is affected by the war, just like the cat.
