I've read three of the four Dickens works in their original form: [b:David Copperfield|58696|David Copperfield|Charles Dickens|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1309281852s/58696.jpg|4711940], [b:The Pickwick Papers|229432|The Pickwick Papers|Charles Dickens|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1345293752s/229432.jpg|3315230], and [b:Oliver Twist|18254|Oliver Twist|Charles Dickens|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1327868529s/18254.jpg|3057979].
While I can understand the editor's (Aswell) desire to make these novels more accessible to the "young reader" audience of her day (1940's), I truly wish she hadn't removed the repetition, padding, and social satire that she felt negatively effected a reader's ability to read these works.
Overall, I show more prefer the original works. show less

In agreement with the previous reviewer, I am glad I came across this collection, and credit it with my first introduction to Dickens. I enjoyed it very much, and hope someday to have the time to read the full versions before sharing them with my daughter.
The four works that are included in this digest were my first introduction to Charles Dickens. I don't remember when I actually read them, but the book was in our family library from my earliest childhood memories. I am so glad it was, because I probably wouldn't have gotten acquainted with Dickens nearly so early otherwise. I still haven't read the full versions of these books, but someday I still intend to! The stories included are Oliver Twist (1837-9), Martin Chuzzlewit (1844), David Copperfield (1849-50), and The Pickwick Papers (1836-7).

Charles Dickens, perhaps the best British novelist of the Victorian era, was born in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England on February 7, 1812. His happy early childhood was interrupted when his father was sent to debtors' prison, and young Dickens had to go to work in a factory at age twelve. Later, he took jobs as an office boy and journalist before show more publishing essays and stories in the 1830s. His first novel, The Pickwick Papers, made him a famous and popular author at the age of twenty-five. Subsequent works were published serially in periodicals and cemented his reputation as a master of colorful characterization, and as a harsh critic of social evils and corrupt institutions. His many books include Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, Bleak House, Great Expectations, Little Dorrit, A Christmas Carol, and A Tale of Two Cities. Dickens married Catherine Hogarth in 1836, and the couple had nine children before separating in 1858 when he began a long affair with Ellen Ternan, a young actress. Despite the scandal, Dickens remained a public figure, appearing often to read his fiction. He died in 1870, leaving his final novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, unfinished.
