Also, a thing that is unusual in historical romance, admissions from people that being a duke kinda sucks and that being a woman of noble birth kinda sucks even more. Nice treatment of long-term grief/ptsd and learning disability. Close to a 5, but a couple of things seemed too contrived (even for romance) so it did not quite make it, but I really loved the read. The character's thoughts and banter were witty, the ones who were meant to be likable genuinely were, and even the unlikable ones weren't mustache-twirling villains, merely difficult or selfish, like regular disagreeable people. The characters' backgrounds and struggles were believable, not overly sordid and contrived. Stray descriptors or someone's inner thoughts often made me chuckle. I found it a very enjoyable read. 2nd Read- I had remembered really liking this but I couldn't recall much about it so I gave it another read. I find the couple very likable, the heroine is loyal and good-hearted, and the hero is chock full of roguish charm. It's fun to watch their feelings develop, and I think they're well suited for each other. Belongs to SeriesDistinctions

HTML: Jack Audley has been a highwayman. A soldier. And he has always been a rogue. What he is not, and never wanted to be, is a peer of the realm, responsible for an ancient heritage and the livelihood of hundreds. But when he is recognized as the long-lost son of the House of Wyndham, his carefree life is over. And if his birth proves to be legitimate, then he will find himself with the one title he never wanted: Duke of Wyndham. Grace Eversleigh has spent the last five years toiling as the companion to the dowager Duchess of Wyndham. It is a thankless job, with very little break from the routine . . . until Jack Audley lands in her life, all rakish smiles and debonair charm. He is not a man who takes no for an answer, and when she is in his arms, she's not a woman who wants to say no. But if he is the true duke, then he is the one man she can never have . . . .No library descriptions found. |
