In Wheels, the author tells a comprehensive story about the auto industry in the early 1970s—from the inception of the design, to the assembly line and onto the sales floor. He also takes us inside the less glamorous side of the industry—politics, power struggles, greed, and corruption—that lurk beneath the surface. Well-written and filled with memorable characters, this is a must-read for Arthur Hailey fans.
Detroit, ~1970.
The reader is thrust into the world of the American car industry, specifically one particular factory and it's struggle to launch a new model whilst adapting to changing circumstances. Within this paradigm we're introduced to an executive with poor work life balance, a struggling yet talented designer and a young inner city black man who struggles to manage with life.
If there's one thing with Hailey's books it is that they are meticulously researched and give a vibrant, detailed look into the field of which they're depicting and Wheels is no exception. In a way it's almost a learning experience about the mid years of the car industry and a view of the future as seen from 1970. Interestingly, a lot of the 'future' show more technologist talked about which may very well have seemed verging on science fiction to a reader 50 years ago have now come to fruition.
I enjoyed this one and thought that the unfolding story lines were well structured and kept ones interest even though the topic of the book itself isn't one I had any particular interest in at all. show less

Though not my favorite Arthur Hailey Story, that is Hotel- enjoyed Wheels, for the immensing into the auto industry. He always as at less one character, that I will care about. This time it was a executive's wife, who stoled from department stores and looked for love, in some shady places. If your a fan of Arthur Hailey, try this novel.
Yet another Arthur Hailey masterpiece.
