Description
"Finding the farmhouse is no picnic for this pack of panicky poultry! The four big chickens are all cooped up when their dream is to see the farmhouse--so they set out in search of it. But what makes something a farmhouse anyway? A roof? Not, that's a doghouse! A chimney? No, that's a tractor! It's nothing but mixed-up mayhem when hapless hens with the right idea go looking for the farmhouse in all the wrong places. Sidesplitting silliness abounds as those crazy chickens return with another show more flapping-fluffing-squawking-flocking farmyard adventure. Henry Cole's boisterous art captures the spirit of this riotously funny new read-aloud and follow-up to the smash hit Big Chickens."--From publisher description. show lessTags

Four chickens want to see the farmhouse but are timid in their search. After several attempts and some misadventures they finally find it not far from their backdoor. Goofy and fun for younger audience. Encourages exploration.
A few months ago, I nominated Big Chickens Fly the Coop for the Cybils....to my astonishment, I recently discovered it was a sequel! Here is the original Big Chickens for your delight.
Both this story and the sequel follow the same pattern. Four nervous chickens work their way through an astonishing number of alliterative verbs as they try to work up their courage. The first isn't quite as well-organized as the second, which has better repeating phrases, but it's still a tongue-twisting delight! These are ideal stories for read-alouds - as fast as you can, with lots of expression and the kids will giggle along! Henry Cole's bug-eyed chickens scuttle through the pages from disaster to disaster and finally strut home, safe and show more proud.
Verdict: Strongly recommended - you can never have too many great chicken books in your collection!

One of two books about four chickens who long to be adventurous. In this story the chickens make their way to the farmhouse while encountering obstacles along the way. This is a great book to share with very young children as the pictures are full of color and detail and the text is quirky and fun. It is a great way to introduce new vocabulary.
So cute! The misadventures of four big chickens. The language is silly and fun. This book would be great to read aloud. Rich beautiful illustrations. I am no expert but I would target this book for ages 4-8.
Summary:
This book is about some chickens that want to see the farmhouse but they run into a bit of trouble.
My Thoughts:
I think it's a funny book and a great book for kids and teachers. The funniest part is when they go the long way to get to the farm house.

My 4 year old picked this from the library to read together. It was fun to read aloud. Lots of activity, creative rhymes and good illustrations.
In an effort to explore their wide 'farm yard' world, a group of chickens tell their tale in a "sporty" verse which ends up whining, "We should have stayed home. . .," Adventurous chickens find their home, in the end, located much closer than they ever imagined.
