Description

Natalie Rome, timid and retiring, discovers that a new life at forty is not, after all, as difficult of achievement as she had feared. With new relations and a new home, she finds security and happiness. She also finds a stepdaughter as timid as herself and a stepson of exceptional charm; a mother-in-law in garden boots and ancient, formal hats who talks loudly and a great deal; and a father-in-law who seldom talks at all. Into this assembly comes Natalie's own daughter Helen; young, show more beautiful, successful and supremely confident. Helen and her new stepbrother enter at once into the age-old struggle between the woman who likes to organize other people's lives, and the man who prefers to arrange his own. show less

This is more along the lines of a romance and not one I would normally see myself reading. I found it in a box of books stored in the garage. Where I got it I don't know. Planning to put it on eBay I read the cover blurb and decided to read it to get a better feel for what it was about.

Set in Devonshire, England, it is the story of a newly remarried widow, Natalie, who is moving from London to set up housekeeping near her new husband's family. She will be leaving her grown daughter, Helen, behind. The difficulty is that Helen has pretty much acted as the head-of-house since Natalie has a difficult time making decisions.

Along with setting up a new home, Natalie will meet her new family composed of Jeremy and Lucille - her new adult show more step-children, Lord and Lady Rome - her eccentric in-laws who are more interested in gardening and a bit absent minded, and a young man named Duncan Macdonald, who may or may not be engaged to Lucille. Hesitant that she will be unwelcomed, she finds that they open their home and hearts to her from the start.

Sorting out the relationships is not straight forward and at times take on a bit of a comedic feel. With four suitors and only two ladies it is interesting to try and figure out who will win the ladies' hands. And Natalie is in the middle of it all while finding that she is much more at home in the countryside than the city.

Written for a leisurely read, I took my time and enjoyed it. I may have to look for a few more of Elizabeth Cadell's book. A Goodread...
