Truly first rate writing. The stories he relates about boyhood with his grandfather in the outdoors are some of the finest you can find. They are well written and vivid. If you ever enjoyed a day outside then there is something for you in this book.
Great stories about a grandpa and his grandson knocking around the outdoors while the elder taught the younger about life. The stories come to a heartwarming but sad end as the Old Man enters the last days of the winter of life as the Boy is just starting his Spring. Good, good stuff.
Great story of a boy and his grandfather in North Carolina. Lots of hunting, and fishing, as well as one of my all-time favorite breakfast descriptions involving a frying pan, eggs, toast, bacon cooked one after the other in pooling grease.
A truly great book, Hemingway like descriptions of rural fishing & hunting and growing up in North Carolina. A must read I would think for a historical perspective of the NC coast.

A fun read of a boyhood many wished they'd had.
