A modern construct of the mythical Mélusine, originally a fey woman with qualities of the water nymph or faerie mer-sprite that guards a sacred waterway. Banks writes a remarkable story of an English family on holiday in modern day France. When they rent a chateau, their interaction with the owners, a strange father and daughter pair, ultimately derails the vacation. This was an adventure, at times falling into an ancient horror, that is often perplexing and suspenseful. One must take the narrative on trust, because it won't feel logical. Although it was apparently pitched for a younger audience, I suggest it is definitely not a children's book.

By the author of The Indian in the Cupboard books; I didn't read this one when I was younger, but I enjoyed it belatedly!
