As a gargoyle, Gary Gar has one job in Xanth: to protect the Swan Knee River from the pollution flowing in from Mundania. But more dirt plus less rain will crack any gargoyle’s stony composure.

So Gary does what any good Xanthian would do: He seeks the help of the Good Magician. But payment for his service is high. Gary must find a philter for the water, while taking on human form to tutor a wild human child, with help from the surly Sorceress Iris, and—even though time is of the essence—taking Hiatus, a known troublemaker, along for the ride.

It won’t be easy, especially when they’re all transported back to the dawn of time. And if they can’t figure out what’s going on in the past, there may be no future for Xanth—come show more hell or high water . . . show less
The Xanth books by Piers Anthony were one of the first SciFi/Fantasy series I ever read. I love puns so I have always enjoyed them. Upon re-reading them I can see that they have some weaknesses but overall they stand the test of time. They are a fun and fast read that keeps me amused without any deep thinking required.
Gary Gar, a gargoyl guardian, must find a spell - philter to purify the polluted Swan Knee River; to do so, Good Magician Humfrey sends him on a quest to become human, mentor a wild, Surprise a talented child, and navigate dangers with Sorceress Iris, facing challenges that transport them back in time to ancient Xanth to re-enact an old ritual, with the future of their world at stake.
#18-- After while you do understand thet these books are going to be really funny to people who were kids in the 70's but younger generations are gonna just love the silliness-- Hannah Barberian (hahahaha)
"SUMMARY: Seeking a spell that will restore the polluted river Swan Knee to a state of purity, guardian Gary Gargoyle finds himself face-to-face with the Good Magician Humfrey"
Enjoyable while reading, then totally forgetable.
½
Not as engaging as many of the other Xanth novels. :(
