Description
"Dame Helen Gardner gave the second series of T. S. Eliot Memorial Lectures at Canterbury in 1968. Her subject was Tragedy; in particular the rarity of the genuinely tragic and the relationship between the imagination of the great tragic poets and religious beliefs. Two year before, she had given the Ewing Lectures in California on religious poetry, its nature and changing form over the centuries. The two sets of lectures seemed to fit naturally together and between them they make up the show more contents of this book.
