This collection of nine short stories is reminiscent, at least to me, of du Maurier and Highsmith. In a variety of settings, we have people facing great psychological stress. There’s murder, secrets, jealousy, and even a little bit of ghostliness to spice things up. Ferrars’ stories are economical, being only as long as they need to be, and while I could guess one or two of the outcomes, the stories were very well told. I’ll have to keep an eye out for more of Ferrars’ work. ( ) no reviews | add a review
Elizabeth Ferrars wrote more than thirty short stories, many of which appeared in anthologies and newspapers by the time Designs on Life was first published in 1980. Already well known for her crime novels, this collection illustrates the author's skill at employing ingenious situations and observations, with nine fresh and original stories that are classic examples of the genre.
