This repetitious text about all the river traffic was fairly well done. I have to admit that it got a little monotonous after a while, but it would probably work well as a bedtime read for a child with an interest in boats. It does have a soothing rhythm.
This was fun to read because I have a 2 y/o foster child fascinated
by boats. The story itself, simply tells about the different types of boats on the water, from a sailboat to a warship. I found the story somewhat boring but my 2 y/o found the pictures extremely enjoyable.

The books itself doesn't much in the way of story telling, but allows the story to be better told through its pictures.

I could see this as a benefit in lessons about the ocean or sea travel.
Everything about boats, boats, boats, all kinds of boats. This is one of the few early Caldecott winners that seems tailored to the youngest kids. It's quite repetitive in its use of words, but should keep a toddler's attention. I think it holds up well, comparing it with similar books that are out there today. The book jacket mentions it was illustrated by [a:Marjorie Flack's|110255|Marjorie Flack|https://www.goodreads.com/assets/nophoto/user/f_50x66-e0ba3b90c110cd67123d6a850d85373e.png] son [a:Jay Hyde Barnum|3139525|Jay Hyde Barnum|https://www.goodreads.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-d9f6a4a5badfda0f69e70cc94d962125.png]. The pictures are fun and lovely.
Summery:
It about all types of boats and what there job is. It talks about the boats on rivers and oceans. What they do and all.

Personal Reaction:
Its a good book about boats. Because it talks about there job and what kind there are. Which is good for kids to read and see that there are a kind of boats and just one.

Extension ideas.
1. Ask kids which kind of boat the like the best.
2. Ask if they been on a boat and what they did when they were on it.
