For this book, I would use it as a second-grade interactive read aloud. The children can discuss the effects of bullying by the bully and the victims. They would plot the character development Bruce the Bear has in the story and how he is before he met the witch and how he is after he meets the witch. Then we would compare and contrast this situation of Bruce the Bear to one in real life and how to handle a situation if the child is being bullied.
You may be able to reduce the impact of bad behavior, but the type remains true. A fun tale about a bear who doesn't learn much.
Bruce, a bear bully, never picks on anyone his own size until he is diminished in more ways than one by a magic spell.
I would use this book as a lesson with fourth grade students to teach and show examples of figurative language. I would first use this book as a read aloud, and then after, focus the students on looking for similes, metaphors, onomatopoeia, and alliteration and have them work with a partner to pick out 2 examples of each from the text. This book can also be used to show descriptive language because there are a lot of descriptors that are used to characterize the bear, witch, and the other animals as well as their movements and activities. I would also use this book to set a classroom norm about not bullying one another and how we are all equal, and nobody is better than another.
This book could be used as an interactive read-aloud in k-3rd grade because it is simple and the topic would be fascinating for them. They could learn more onomatopoeia words from this book as it uses less common words for sounds, and they could also work on their retelling standards.
I would use this book as an interactive read aloud for grades 2nd-3rd because I feel that the language would be not age appropriate for younger but would also be too simple for older grades. I would use this book to teach students about onomatopoeia an students would be bale to participate in using onomatopoeia during the interactive read aloud and I could use this book to have students retell the story. This book could also be used to describe chapters such as "Big Bad Bruce" and this book could be used for teaching students about bullying and how you should treat others the way that you would like to be treated.
I would use this book as an interactive read aloud for third grade because it is a longer picture book that would be too long for younger grades and some of the language the author uses could be confusing and might have to be explained while reading so it would be more beneficial for me to read it aloud.
