Fans of Laurie Marks's more recent work will recognize some of the characters and ideas herein, but this is its own story and an interesting one. I must say I strongly disliked the way it ended, but that's a matter of opinion. It's certainly a well-written story with interesting characters and some excellent world-building.

It had a lot of interesting characters, but it felt so disjointed that I never quite fell into the story.
