Description
Celebrate the 20th anniversary of PAUL POPE's (Battling Boy, Batman: Year 100) Eisner-nominated sci-fi/cyberpunk classic with this new edition. Time Magazine listed HEAVY LIQUID among the 100 most important science fiction graphic novels of the decade when it originally debuted in the 2000s, and its relevance and influence has only increased since it was first published. In a future where New York has evolved into a sci-fi metropolis, a man named S becomes entwined in a mystery that's show more littered with love and drugs-and in particular, an addictive substance called heavy liquid that's both a drug and an art form. In his search for the one artist skilled enough to render heavy liquid into a perfect sculpture, S finds himself battling deadly psychopathic foes as well as the inner demons of addiction. If he can survive these physical and mental trials, S just might discover the shocking secret behind heavy liquid, and a love he thought lost forever. show lessTags

A mysterious metal that can be cooked to produce a peculiar drug, an art collector looking for the perfect artist, a bunch of violent thugs on the hunt, and S, who stole the metal, takes the drugs, is hired by the collector to look for the artist while the thugs are on his tail. Near future sci-fi hard-boiled crime art chase detective thing, painfully hip and cool and street-smart, thoroughly rock'n'roll and a little bit out of this world.
Not my favorite of Paul Pope's books, but still a good read. The printing I had seemed to have some repeated pages, I'm pretty sure they weren't there for the affect of it.

Heavy Liquid is enjoyable enough, a science fiction mystery about the origins and uses of a substance that can be either a drug or an art project, and is worth getting killed for. But it's also ultimately unfulfilling. The story stops just where it should be starting, and only the lead character feels anywhere close to being fleshed out, beyond what the plot requires.
