After the Empire: The Breakdown of the American Order

Pretty persuasive- it does make sense out of some of the weirdnesses we've seen lately in America's foreign policy, and it's recommended on that count.

I will mention that Todd seems to have some serious issues with women; the only real vitriol in the entire book is aimed at American women and particularly feminists. He is very comfortable with the idea of men oppressing women (cultural diversity!), but not at all comfortable about women objecting to being oppressed (apparently cultural diversity does not extend THAT far!).

Also, based on current trends in France about the wearing of burqas etc., he is dead wrong about how tolerant France is about seeing such as a purely cultural matter; this is relevant since he's holding up France (he's show more French) as a Good Example of how America OUGHT to be (i.e., tolerant of the oppression of women, apparently). He also turns a blind eye to other racial and cultural prejudices in France, while coming down hard on such things in the US. show less

A glimmer of hope when i first read it, back then in the so distant now 2001. Here was a historian who had seen through all the hype about the US, and while they were menacing us with global shock and awe, he shouted that the king was naked. And explained it in clear language. And even earlier, was the only one to predict USSR's demise, based on arguments drawn from historical demography. His minor flaws, like a certain macho attitude and conservative politics, seemed trivial then to me. Must be read.

Yhdysvallat muistuttaa Toddin mielestä luhistuvaa Rooman valtakuntaa, joka kuluttaa enemmän kuin tuottaa. Toddin mielestä Yhdysvallat tarvitsee käytännössä raha-apua pitääkseen nykyisen kulutustasonsa. Yhdysvallat on heikentyvä talousmahti, joka nykyisellään estää muun maailman talouskehitystä. Yhdysvallat ei ole imperiumi, joka levittäisi hyvinvointia ympärilleen. Yhdysvaltojen sotilaallista suorituskykyä ei testattu, sillä amerikkalaisten sotilasoperaatiot ovat kohdistuneet sellaisia johtajia tai valtioita vastaan, jotka ovat muutenkin olleet romahtamaisillaan. Uutisista tutut amerikkalaiset talousskandaalit ovat oire syvistä ongelmista, kapitalismi Yhdysvalloissa on vaikeuksissa. Toddin mukaan amerikkalainen markkinatalous ei tuota enää hyödykkeitä, vaan valuuttaa. Maaginen dollari pitää Yhdysvaltoja pystyssä, mutta jatkossa USA:n elintaso putoaa ja merkitys pienenee. Eurooppa tekee viisaasti kehittäessään yhteistyötä demokratisoituvan Venäjän kanssa. Myös useat Afrikan ja Lähi-idän valtiot rauhoittuvat ajan myötä. Todd perustelee näkemystään sillä, että lukutaidon leviäminen merkitsee syntyvyyden säännöstelyä, mikä tuo mukanaan olojen vakiintumisen.

En lisant cet ouvrage près de 10 ans après sa parution, on se rend compte que ses analyses tiennent toujours : la démocratie (et le contrôle des naissances) suit l'alphabétisation (voir printemps arabe), les veilles démocraties se transforment en oligarchies, les Etats-Unis inquiets car complètement dépendants du reste du monde.

L’historien et démographe Emmanuel Todd a publié à l’automne 2002, un essai qui avançait des idées originales, une vision lucide de la crise qui se dessinait entre le monde et les États-Unis. S’appuyant sur les données démographiques, économiques, Emmanuel Todd construit un portrait du déclin de l’Amérique cohérent et logique.

Republié en 2004 en format de poche dans la collection Folio, cet essai est écrit dans un style abordable et cohérent. Intéressant et instructif. A lire en tandem avec Le choc des civilisations de Samuel Huntington.

Utile, rapide et précis. Todd est certainement quelqu'un à lire... A aimer ou pas, autre histoire.

Il observe des signes objectifs, comme le taux d'alphabétisation et la planification des naissances, dans de nombreux pays que l'Occident a tendance à diaboliser. Il s'agit selon lui d'une transition vers une certaine modernisation. Une vision historique à long terme est nécessaire pour faire contrepoids à la vision journalistique à court terme.
