When I first saw Judy Garland's movie on the Harvey Girls I thought it was just a story. Little did I know that there were truly Harvey Girls that moved west to civilize the railroad outposts owned by Fred Harvey. Being the wait staff in the restaurants attached to the train stations the women were known for their abilities, physical presence and charm. The photographs in this book also bring home the difficult lives they lived. ( ) no reviews | add a review
The U.S. Cavalry, the Winchester rifle, and Sam Colt's pistol may have on the West, but it was the Harvey Girls who civilized it. As waitresses in Fred Harvey's chain of high-quality restaurants, the Harvey Girls made the Santa Fe very popular, and left an indelible mark on the Wild West."The narrative is lively, conversational, and spiced with wry humor that will interest even reluctant readers... A solid treatment of an aspect of Western history seldom considered in other texts". -- School Library Journal No library descriptions found. |
