Description

A funny, bittersweet exploration of how a child can change in one short year of love, loss, and growing up...

Seven-year-old Scotty Ocean decides that seven is going to be "his year." But soon after his birthday, his artist-turned-alcoholic mother abandons the family—leaving Scotty and his two older sisters alone with their father. As his perfect year is torn apart (falls apart?), Scotty begins to act out during school and takes a series of increasingly wild actions to try to win his show more mother back—and, when that doesn't work, to replace her.

Funny and deeply affecting, An Ocean in Iowa traces Scotty's desperate attempt to hold on to his childhood while the foundation of his family disintegrates. As Scotty's year as a seven-year-old flies by—and the dreaded eight approaches—Hedges explores how Scotty sheds his childhood in a one-eighty of the year he hoped would be so perfect. Beautifully written, and with Hedges's careful attention to period detail, this compelling coming-of-age novel sets the private turmoil of a disintegrating family against the backdrop of the Vietnam War and the turbulent 1960s.

This was a fun read because I live in the city in which it takes place and most of the places mentioned are real. It also took place in the time I grew up, so all the television shows were familiar.

Scotty Ocean turns seven. His mother leaves him and his two older sisters. Scotty tries various ways to get his mother to return to the family. Some are funny and some are embarrassing. If you are interested in a humorous book about a young boy growing up in Iowa, I would suggest The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid by Bill Bryson. This is a laugh out loud that takes place in Des Moines.

this was fine. a story about a rough year in an otherwise normal white middle class kid's life in the 60s. scotty is 7 and his mom is an alcoholic and his dad goes into rages and they're getting divorced. so it's a year where he doesn't behave as well as his older sisters did or as he usually would and it's a year where he grows up. nothing spectacular but it's good enough and a very quick read.
the writers voice was so adorable but the story left much to be desired.

Hmmm. It was ok. The images of seven-year-old life brought me back, tho! VERY dry humor. I didn't really laugh.
Interesting characters but no plot whatsoever.
I never connected with the main character.
