I highly recommend reading this collection of short stories originally published in the 1950s. Maugham's writing is clear but obscure, and dense yet comprehensible. These stories are not fluff; they might take awhile to wade through, but they are well written, and they make you think. The themes of race, loneliness, love, and hypocrisy abound in these stories. Overall, the stories contained within this volume ("The Letter," "Red," "Honolulu," "The Vessel of Wrath," "The Book-Bag," "The Outstation," "The Pool," "Rain," and "The Force of Circumstance") are well worth reading.
