Charlie Mae is made to keep house for her father and brothers after her mother leaves. She escapes one night to Nauvoo for a night of adventure and meets a boy and his grandmother who are very kind to her and are Mormons. She discovers that her father and brothers burned houses and shot people and she is determined to leave. When she gets a new step-mother and step-siblings, the situation becomes more intolerable than ever before. Her brother helps her to escape and she takes the ruby with her. She also discovers that her mother didn't leave, her father killed her when he was in one of his rages.
