This beautifully written and illustrated book is about a young boy telling his Granddaddy of all the things they will do together when he gets old. I couldn’t have picked a better book to read, it shows how a young child values the relationship of his grandpa. Every activity that this young boy and his Granddaddy do are the things he wants to do when is gets old, but he is imagining his Granddaddy there with him. Every page has beautiful pictures that can almost tell the story alone without words, but through the child’s perspective. The story made me sad in a way, bringing memories from my very own grandparents and the things I wish I could’ve done with them. I also felt the emotions of wishful thinking, that when I get old I show more will be the same age as my grandparents, not thinking they won’t be here with us anymore. This would be a great book for kids around grandparents’ day or any day to show how one little boy appreciates every little thing he does with his grandpa. show less
I liked this book for many different reasons. I remember having this book read to me as a child. I haven't read it in years and forgot how much I love this book. Although it is a different culture from my own, I was still able to connect with the main character as a child growing up. I always wanted to experience life the way this child did with his grandparents because of my love for my grandparents. I thought that the writing was so intrinsic and inspiring even as an adult. I love the way the pictures capture the idea of an adult growing up through a child's eyes. The illustration is profound as it shows the child's perspective along with an adult's perspective of life. This book really helped me as a child understand the importance show more of living each day to your fullest and enjoying the different parts of your life. We all inevitably grow older, but what this book tells us is to embrace this. Young children would benefit greatly from reading this book and revisiting it as an adult. show less
Angela Johnson does an amazing job of creating stories that are relatable to all ages and connect different cultures. This story is told from the perspective of a little boy that talks about that different things he wants to do with his grandfather when he gets older. The story is super simple, yet relatable to anyone that has grandparents that they enjoy spending time with. Both characters in this story are African American which shows children of other backgrounds, that they can relate to other cultures when it comes to the love for family. I would recommend this to children ages 5-8 because of the simplicity and cute illustrations.
This book is about a young boy expressing all the things to do with his grandpa when he is old with him. He says they will go walking and even fishing. He is expressing to his grandpa that he will be beside him every step of the way.
I enjoyed this book because it is very heartfelt. This boy just loves his grandpa and enjoys his company that he plans on all these things to do when he gets older with him. I wish I would have had that chance with my grandma because I would have loved to do all those things with her also.
This would be great for teaching lessons on love and how to express it. Also, it would provide ideas for other positive things to do other than watch television or play video games.

Almost amazing, but I couldn't recognize the child as the same one throughout, and I don't understand how they think about these ideas. I guess if we just accept the child's stream-of-consciousness, the heedlessness of it all, it's fine.
I found this and several others on openlibrary and will read others by her for #ownvoices.

This picture story book is about a girl who discusses doing activities with her grandfather when she is older. The text continually begins with "When I am Old with you grandaddy", which may be helpful for younger readers because of the repetition in the story. The story has little to no plot, it is mostly a child listing the things she wants to do with her grandaddy. As far as the illustrations go, there is some synergy with the text because instead of showing her doing things with the grandfather when she is older, it shows her doing the activities with him now. This adds more to the text because it shows that when she is older she wants to do the same things with her grandfather as she is doing now. All of the illustrations, which are show more done in watercolor, have some detail, but not too much to overwhelm young readers. For example, on pages sixteen and seventeen, the illustration shows the emotions of the characters while they sit on the porch, something the little girl wants to do with her grandfather when she gets older. This illustration demonstrates the synergy represented in a number of the pictures. show less
This book is about a little boy who likes to do things with his granddaddy. He begins to think of the many things that he wants to do with his granddaddy when he gets older. He begins with them sitting in rocking chairs together and the book ends with them sitting in rocking chairs together enjoying all the things that they had done.
This book was a little to repetitive and drawn out but it had good pictures. This book is a true multicultural book because the things that the child wanted to do were that of their culture.
This book could be used in the classroom to talk about the different cultures of the many ethnic groups. The students could also read this book and compare their culture with their peer’s cultures.
