One of my favorite things is the sound of my 6-year-old son belly laughing. My son gets a kick out of life, so I get to hear this often. Another of my favorite things is to curl up with him and read. I love to share a story with him before bed. So, you can imagine my joy when I get to enjoy both at the same time. My son laughed his way through [Miss Daisy Is Crazy], the first book in the My Weird School series. I had a few chuckles too. Gutman writes a good story, fast paced with lots of "cliff hangers" at the end of the chapters. We couldn't wait to see if A. J. and his 2nd grade classmates could read a million pages and turn the school into a video game arcade. He even put several more books from this series on his Christmas list. show more I'll bet Santa won't disappoint him! show less
The chapter book "Miss Daisy is Crazy" was quite enjoyable to read. First, I thought the title itself and the illustration on the cover made the book look appealing so that is why I picked it up. (ex: the illustration shows Miss Daisy upside down and on the bottom of the cover page it says "my weird school"). Second, when AJ admits he doesn't' like school so does Miss daisy. I found this to be funny because everything AJ didn't like or understand, Miss Daisy felt the same way (ex: she rather sit home and eat bon-bons). Third, I thought it was funny that the teacher herself, Miss Daisy did not know how to add, subtract, multiple, or divide! (ex: every time she added pencils or subtracted them she just got the answer wrong!) "Miss Daisy show more is Crazy" is a text filled with humor about a teacher who knows nothing and does not know how to teach the children. The children decide to take a liking to school and read as much as they can so they can turn the school into an arcade for one night! The idea behind this text is for it to be a funny chapter book for children to read. Some children may be able to relate to this book in some ways as well. show less
In the book Miss Daisy is Crazy by Dan Gutman, the theme is humor in imperfection and curiosity and unconventional learning. Within the book the story shows that in education not everything follows traditional learning. Miss Daisy reveals that she might know everything but she still challenges her students to use critical thinking, ask questions, and if she is wrong it is a good thing to point it out and teach the teacher. By doing this Miss Daisy is showing the students that all students have something valuable to contribute.
The character development plays a big role in this book. Miss Daisy shows the students that it's okay to be silly and quirky, she practices non-traditional learning which is a great way to keep her students show more engaged but also making learning fun for her students. As for the narrator known as A.J he at first is like every student he isn't excited to go to school and learn boring subjects. Slowly but surly throughout the books A.J becomes more engaged and excited due to Miss Daisy’s bubbly personality that makes learning fun for students but also motivates them. While rereading the book it is not heavily illustrated but when it does have illustrations they are small black and white sketches. To the reader, illustrations add excitement to the story because you are able to see what every student is thinking. The silly illustrations add to the humor and makes the book more approachable to children. The illustrations add funky shapes, fun lines and a better perspective.
This book is great for students to read but yet enjoy what they are reading. Young children are able to connect with the humor and relate to the school setting. The story pushes students to see that learning can be fun, silly and enjoyable. Personally I really enjoyed reading this book, as being really behind in reading I especially remember reading this book in fourth grade and giggling at all the funny senses. It let me enjoy reading and I didn't even know that while reading I was improving my comprehension. show less

This is the first book of the "My Weird School" collection by Dan Gutman. My second grade students loved the book! Goofy, yes. Silly story line, yes. Unrealistic, yes. But catches the readers attention and sends them flying to the library to get the next in the series, YES! I read this story aloud to my students and after our next visit to the library many of them had checked out other titles form the series.
I finally read a My Weird School and I found it enjoyable. It's the story of AJ who hates school and a teacher who claims "she doesn't know anything." It's a fun read and perfect for those middle readers in like first or second grade.
Funny school story, where Miss Daisy convinces the 2nd grade class that she doesn't know how to do arithmetic or read. Fortunately, they've got her back.
This book shows how Miss Daisy, the second grade teacher, starts off the school year not knowing how to teach anything--math, reading, arithmetic, etc. There's a rumor around the school that there's a dungeon and the kids seek to find it to make their own arcade out of it.
