The book is the speech that Abraham Lincoln spoke once the Union defeated the Confederacy at the battle of Gettysburg. The speech was only two minutes long and he spoke about equality and freedom. The book is the speech with great illustrations and the whole book is black and white. The last page is amazing because the three American flags are blowing and black and white people are finally united as one. The book has many pictures of the two battling and many pictures of the destruction of the war. The book would be great to read to students when learning about the Civil War.
I really like this book for a few reasons. One it sends a powerful message in such a short manner. This book can be read by all ages however, only higher aged students will understand the meaning of what actually happened in Gettysburg in July of 1863. There is a forward at the beginning of the book that also goes into great depth about war happened those first 3 days in July. From the forward, you learn a lot. Since the book is strictly what Abraham Lincoln said in 3 minutes, one may need further investigation to figure out why he said what he said. I also liked how the forward talked about the crowds reaction. Even though Lincoln's speech was 272 words, the crowd applauded him 5 different times. Not only did this book give a powerful show more message, the pictures give one too. The pictures are in black and white and colored with pencil. The pictures show emotion and hardship. show less

Having driven through Gettysburg today, it was wonderful to read this with my boys tonight. They are very interested in the Revolutionary War... hoping to expand their enjoyment of American history!
A handsomely designed reissue of Daugherty's bold, elegant illustrated accompanyment to the speech originally published in 1947. This edition includes Daugherty's original afterword, a new afterword by a Civil War scholar and the artist's own interpretations of each illustration.
The illustrations only add to this powerful speech made by President Lincoln at the time of the civil war. His speech and the illustration takes you back in time when our nation was torn apart. What an incredi ble book to read.
The words of the speech with striking illustrations.

Abraham Lincoln (February 12, 1809 - April 15, 1865) was the 16th president of the United States, serving from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. Lincoln led the United States through its Civil War, its bloodiest war and its greatest moral, constitutional and political crisis. In doing so, he preserved the Union, abolished slavery, show more strengthened the federal government, and modernized the economy. Lincoln was a self-educated lawyer in Illinois, a Whig Party leader and a state legislator in the 1830s. After a series of highly publicized debates in 1858, during which Lincoln spoke out against the expansion of slavery, he lost the U.S. Senate race to his archrival, Democrat Stephen A. Douglas. In 1860, Lincoln secured a Republican Party presidential nomination. His presidential election resulted in seven southern slave states to form the Confederacy before he took the office on March 4, 1861. Lincoln is regarded by historians as one of the greatest United States presidents. During his term, he created the system of national banks with the National Banking Act. This provided a strong financial network in the country. It also established a national currency. In 1862, Congress created, with Lincoln's approval, the Department of Agriculture. Lincoln was able to appoint five Supreme Court justices during his time as president. He is largely responsible for instituting the Thanksgiving holiday in the US. Lincoln's Gettysburg Address of 1863 became an iconic statement of America's dedication to the principles of nationalism, republicanism, equal rights, liberty, and democracy. Lincoln held a moderate view of Reconstruction. On April 15, 1865, six days after the surrender of Confederate commanding General Robert E. Lee, Lincoln was assassinated at the Ford Theater by John Wilkes Booth, a noted actor and Confederate spy from Maryland. Lincoln was married to Mary Todd Lincoln on November 4, 1842. They had four children, all boys. Only the oldest, Robert, survived to adulthood. After Lincoln's death, Robert committed his mother, Mary, for a short time. The death of their children had a profound effect on the mental health of both Lincoln and his wife. (Bowker Author Biography) show less
