by Mancur Olson

Description
In Saving Persuasion, Bryan Garsten uncovers the early modern origins of today's suspicious attitude toward rhetoric and seeks to loosen its grip on contemporary political theory. He argues that the artful practice of persuasion ought to be viewed as a crucial part of democratic politics. Against theorists who advocate a rationalized ideal of deliberation aimed at consensus, Garsten argues that a controversial politics of partiality and passion can produce a more engaged and more show more deliberative kind of democratic discourse. show lessTags

There are some theories in this book, like that to avoid the free rider problem large pressure groups either needs coercion, or an added incentive, like insurance, for members to join and pay their dues. But filling up most of the pages are adulatory references to almost every member of the University Professors' Union who ever wrote anything about groups - which indicates membership cohesion implemented without either? A summary of the content useful outside academia would be short.
Olson maybe undervaluates social incentives for "latent groups" too, and should have been very interesting a more articulated analysis about "enterpreneur" figure linked with Olson's theory, as briefly pointed out in '71's appendix. There's no discussion at all over links between groups and social identity, but maybe too early for a 1965 work (just after a few years postmaterialists movements will stimulate heavy discussions on the issue). Nonetheless a master-theory still useful today for several analysis.
An extremely influential and important analysis of group efforts, especially politics.
Surprisingly accessible theory of collective action. Among the founding texts of Public Choice.
