One of the best back-to-the-farm books to date, this masterpiece of Maine humor will add many more fans to the legion who loved The Farmer Takes a Wife. When John Gould rebuilt the burned-down Maine farmhouse that his great-grandfather Jacob had built, he tried to preserve as much of the old house as he could because of his great respect for his forebears. You'll find yourself yearning with Mr. Gould for Gradfather's good old Yankee vigor, for the days when living was an excuse for eating, when the kitchen brimmed over with pumpkin, mince, apple pies - for all of which you'll find Grandmother's mouth-watering recipes. And the wonderful anecdotes about Grandfather's colorful cronies will make you, too, pine over the sadness of progress.
In 1940, the 1780-farmhouse that noted Maine essayist and curmudgeon John Gould's great-grandfather built burned to the ground. To honor the generations that came before him, Gould there and then decided to rebuild the house in Lisbon Falls. No library descriptions found. |
