Who Was George Washington?

I really like these set of books, like all of the "who was..." I found them very informational and not boring. I think that it is great that they incorporate pictures to help students with the text. There is a lot of words per page so I would assign this to a fourth or fifth grade classroom and have them read it silently to themselves. This specific book is about George Washington and I would have the students read it and make a timeline of his life. This would be very beneficial to students because it allows them to be creative and see the bigger picture of his life. They would have to know which events came before others, and they would have to place them on a timeline accordingly.

Summary: This is a really good book in series of books about really important people in U.S. history. This book goes into his life from start to finish, from him being one of the founding fathers, to the two wars he fought in, all the way through his presidency.

Personal Reaction: I like books like this, especially when it comes to American history. It really is important to have the younger generation learn about American history and its exceptionalism. This book is absolutely engaging for young and old alike.

Classroom extension: This along with others in the series, would be a really awesome way to teach about our presidents. This would augment any discussion concerning George Washington very well. I would definitely use it in my own show more classroom. show less

I can't recall that I thought there was anything really wrong with the book, and it reminded me of facts that I had long since forgotten. I had always thought that Martha Custiss was older than GW, but it turns out she was approximately the same age, just widowed early.

Great book to learn about our First President. The book gives enough information for the reader to know who Washington was and the story behind the man who became our first president. In addition to his life, from birth to death, Edwards discusses some myths/facts which give the reader more information about political happenings in history. The simple illustrations of people, places and maps also help tell the story of who Washington was and what he accomplished as a man and our president.

Summary- This is one book out of the “who was” series. This book is about the first president George Washington. I give you facts about George Washington’s life, such as where he grew up, his childhood, his role in the revolutionary war, the he never did not want to be president and many more facts about this life.

Personal reaction.- This would be a great book for younger reader that were doing any type of research project. I remember reading a lot of the “who was” series when I was younger. This book gives facts about George Washington’s life in an interesting way that appeals to children.

Classroom extensions
1.“Who was…”- Allow the students to pick a person (or group) for show more the Who was series, to write a short research paper over. After the read the book have them get in groups and tell the other people of the group about what they have learned about the person they research.
2.“if I were president”- Have the students write about some of the thin g they would do if they were the President of the United States. show less

This illustrated children's biography is written in elementary friendly language in order to inform students about the first president of the United States and what he did did before assuming that title. This book can be used to introduce a topic in social studies and to introduce to students what it means to write a biography. This can also show students that biographies do not have to be boring and monotonous.

This book is so informative! I learned so much about Washington that I never knew. It was a great book to read and I enjoyed learning about history in an interesting way.
