With a story that is based on poems and verses, the author has to be able to capture the interest of readers and tell a story in a matter of words. And Steven Herrick definitely did that. It's been awhile since I was able to read one of these novels mostly because I get distracted easily. But Billy definitely held my interest as he took me on his adventure. It was a touching story and imagines the life of a runaway. It also gives hope to those unfortunate souls that they can still be saved and find a place in the world.
A beautifully written story by Steven Herrick in short 1 page chapters about Billy, Caitlin and Old Bill. A delight to read, sad at times but ultimately heart warming. Just read it, you'll love it too.

Written in verse format and with only three characters, "The Simple Gift" was a touching read about family and friendship. Loved it.
Weary of life with his alcoholic, abusive father, 16-year-old Billy packs a few belongings and hits the road. When he is given a gift that changes everything, he leans how to forge his own path in life and the real meaning of family.
