I picked this book up on a whim, knowing nothing of the author or her works. I am very glad I did. It is a light and enjoyable "English country village" story and worked very well without any knowledge of the previous books in the series. The main focus is Justinia and her slow growth from a woman who is controlled first by her parents and then her husband, to a person who makes choices for herself. Many of the large cast of characters in her extended family and small town also set their lives in order.
