Summary:
This book is about children trying to care for their sick mother. The children thought, they were being helpful by allowing their sick mother to rest. But in reality, the children were making a big mess, causing their mother more work and less rest. Once the children decided to spend sometime outside, their mother was able to get the rest she needed to get well.
Personal Reaction:
I thought this book was funny. I loved the illustrations of this book, exspecially the expression of fustration on the mother's face. Children are always getting into things, without knowing the messes that they make, but got to love them.
Classroom Extension:
1. I would have the students draw a picture of themselves doing something helpful for their show more parents.
2. I would have a class discussion about some of the mistakes the children made throughout the book. Then, ask the student what the children could have done to avoid those mistakes or what the children could have done to correct them. show less

Mercer Mayer was born December 30, 1943 in Little Rock Arkansas. While attending school at the Honolulu Museum of Art, Mayer decided to enter the field of children's book illustration. He created a portfolio of sketches and peddled them wherever he could. He moved to New York City in 1964, pursuing further instruction at the Art Students League of show more New York, where he met an artist named Marianna who became his first wife. He soon created a new portfolio and with these new sketches persuaded editors at Dial Press and Harper & Row to give him some illustration work. Mayer published his first book, A Boy, a Dog, and a Frog, at Dial Press in 1967. It was notable for being a completely wordless picture book one that tells its story entirely with pictures.
