Description

"Carr Mackay had an okay job, a beautiful woman and a lot of big plans--a pathway marked for himself through life. But one day he met a beautiful, frightened girl who didn't quite belong in this world. And something began. Irrevocably. Something that diverted him forever from his path, shook the sleepy dust from his eyes and brought him to a startling confrontation with the furthest limits of life, death--and an alien, terrifying danger..."--Back cover.

giovannigf It's impossible not to assume that Leiber's book influenced Priest's. Priest is the better writer technically, but his po-mo winking makes his novel not as satisfying as Lieber's earnest original.

First words
When Carr Mackey first caught sight of the frightened girl, he was feeling exceptionally bored. The offices of General Employment seemed a jail, time an unclimbable wall, life a straitjacket, the very air a slow-setting invis... (show all)ible cement. Even thoughts of Marcia failed to put any color in his gray mood. -Chapter One, The Frightened Girl
