I don't know why it's taken me so long to try this first "How Do Dinosaurs..." book from author Jane Yolen and illustrator Mark Teague, but I'm glad that our July dinosaur theme, over in the Picture-Book Club to which I belong prompted me to give it a chance, as How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight is an absolute delight! With a rhyming text that just begs to be read aloud - "How does a dinosaur say goodnight, when Papa comes in to turn off the light? Does a dinosaur slam his tail and pout? Does he throw his teddy bear all about?" - and brightly colored illustrations that capture the humor of each (possible) situation, it makes for an ideal bedtime selection. Highly recommended to all the little dinosaurs out there!
I used to read this nightly to my daughter when she was 2-3 - not only is this funny and charming, it made our bedtime routine a breeze. She has always been resistant to bedtime (even now at almost-6), but reading this story always seemed to calm her down. Maybe it was seeing and hearing all the silly (but much performed by my daughter) behavior these dinosaurs *didn't* gave her a reason NOT to behave in similar ways. I still have the ending memorized, though we've moved on to different stories most nights.
Now, as she's older, she got a kick out of trying to find and sound out the dinosaur names hidden on each page. Nothing better than finding a new way to appreciate an old, beloved book!

My daughter loves this book because of the mischevious looking dinosaurs. This book is great to read to a child before bedtime. We find that we are able to ask our daughter, "Would a dinosaur act like that at bedtime?" it usually makes her smile and say "nooo". I would recommend this book for any parent looking for a good bedtime book.
Dinos say goodnight with 'Good Manners', which of course is the point of this great bedtime book. It is presented with humor, in rhyme, and with great illustrations. My grandsons love this book; we have read it many, many times.
This book sets out to show how dinosaurs go to bed through humor. Starting with some things most kids do from time to time, and end up going to bed anyways. The story has a nice rhyme pattern and beat that goes to the flow of the words to the end of the book. However, this is more of a bed time story then a classroom story, but it could be put on a “Good books to read together” list sent home with the students.
Loved it. The story rhymes and the pictures are funny. It was a nice bedtime story about what dinosaurs do when its time to go to sleep. The author made it fun for children.
We have so much fun with this book. The 4-year-old gets into the action and likes to pretend that he's a T-Rex. The art is just perfect not too cutesy and just cartoony enough that you can't help but imagine this huge animal trying to do his bedtime rituals with you. The entire series is fun and I love just about everything that Jane Yolen writes.
