Very Bad Poetry

Description

Writing very bad poetry requires talent.nbsp;nbsp; It helps to have a wooden ear for words, a penchant for sinking into a mire of sentimentality, and an enviable confidence that allows one to write despite absolutely appalling incompetence. The 131 poems collected in this first-of-its-kind anthology are so glaringly awful that they embody a kind of genius.nbsp;nbsp; From Fred Emerson Brooks' "The Stuttering Lover" to Matthew Green's "The Spleen" to Georgia Bailey Parrington's misguided "An show more Elegy to a Dissected Puppy", they mangle meter, run rampant over rhyme, and bludgeon us into insensibility with their grandiosity, anticlimax, and malapropism. Guaranteed to move even the most stoic reader to tears (of laughter), Very Bad Poetry is sure to become a favorite of the poetically inclined (and disinclined). show less

Reading a volume of Roger Ebert's reviews of movies he hated reminded me how much I enjoy this book, no matter how many times I read it. I mean, is it possible not to enjoy a book that brings into my life a masterpiece like "Ode on a Mammoth Cheese"? It never pokes fun at any amateur poets, or even living poets--only people who once got paid (or at least chosen) to publish the truly awe-inspiringly bad poems within.
The authors search high and low for prime examples of bad poetry and succeed. This would be a great volume for a fun party, each guest taking turns reading stanza after excruciating stanza. I highly recommend it if you’re looking for a laugh.

Magnificently bad poetry contained within. Of course the unavoidable question is: how does one become acquainted with such a wide range of bad poetry? Word of mouth, like the appreciation of truly "good-bad" movies, or was it serendipity?
Our chapter of Sigma Tau Delta (the English honors society) used to have an annual Poor Poetry Reading holiday party. I took this each time, and each time found something acceptably cliche, drearily rhymed, or otherwise just plain bad. Probably a book like this appeals to the more pedantic poetry snobs among us, but it is a fairly simple pleasure, and one best enjoyed in small doses at great intervals. Also I'd imagine this might provide a nice, encouraging diversion for frustrated poets who need a good chuckle.

A collection of poems by poets of whom it might be said, with Burns, 'O'er Pegasus side ye ne'er laid a stride/Ye only smelt the place whaur he s..t'.
It certainly delivers what it promises.

Fear not, old Eagle
The bay of the beagle!

In that same palace, the Uffizi, I
Remember to have marked a virgin lift
Upon a silver salver up on high
The offering of her breasts – no trivial gift.
