Description
When his body is hideously damaged in an enemy attack, it looks as though Inquisitor Gideon Ravenor's promising career would be abruptly brought short. Now, encased in a life support sytem that keeps him alive but forever cuts him off from the physical world, Ravenor utilises his formidable mental powers to continue his investigations. Along with his retinue of warriors and assassins, Gideon Ravenor fights to protect an Imperium he can no longer see, hear or feel..

Genuine Contender For Best 40K Novel
To get it out of the way: Warhammer 40K is Space Nazi Yahtzee, the Inquisition are the apotheosis of cops, the Imperium are not the good guys, and ACAB.
This is simply a great hardboiled scifi action crime extravaganza that would be brilliant with or without the 40k flavour, but it uses all the concepts and trappings of 40K spectacularly to really make the Dark Millennium feel real and, equally, uses the powers and elements to great effect and makes all the grimdark science fantasy ridiculousness vivid to point of seeming plausible.
Truly the best kind of popcorn reading.
Toby Longworth has long been my favourite Black Library narrator and is superb.
My only criticism would be a rather weak and wishy show more washy, 'Ravenor is a good cop in a filthy galaxy' thing it does at one point. These awful things exist in an awful universe and it's one thing to show a human side of the pawns of space fascists, it's another to try and justify it.
Genuinely, loved this and will definetly continue the trilogy and check out the Eisenhorn books eventually.

I dislike the concept of warhammer books, but when the writing is as good as this who cares if it is based on some silly game. there is none of the clunkiness or flatness of character that I associate with books based on RPG.
From opening you are immerced into a world where there is right and wrong and might wins. we have ravenor who works for the emperor and seems to be all prowerful with his mightly mental powers - yet is restricted to a chair.
Lots of action, lots of fighting - I did miss the big battle scenes that he normally does so well

Enjoyable foray into the Warhammer 40k lore.

- The great procession of the triumph passed under the Spatian Gate, and I marched with it, into the atrocity. That ceremonial arch, so splendid and massive, forms a threshold in the course of my life. I stepped across it an... (show all)d was remade, transmuted from one form into another.
