Most children have probably never wondered what their food thinks of them, nor considered what sort of lullaby a praying mantis might sing to her offspring, but that won't prevent them from taking Robert Weinstock's wacky Food Hates You, Too to heart. With nineteen amusing poems, all addressing the issue of eating in one way or another, this little collection will appeal to young readers' sense of the absurd.

As other reviewers have noted, the author uses an expansive vocabulary, but it is the rhyming sing-song quality of his poems, together with the creative (and slightly gross) mixed media illustrations, that really make this picture-book collection worthwhile. I myself particularly relished the send-up of Margaret Wise Brown's show more Goodnight Moon in Mom, but there's plenty here to give readers young and old a chuckle. show less
It is easy to see Weinstock's background in graphic design come out in this hilarious compilation of poems about food. Lots going on in the detailed illustrations which support the humor of the text.
Poetry
“Food Hates You, Too” written by Robert Weinstock is a funny collection of poetry that emphasizes quirky aversions that many people have toward food. The illustrations are just as entertaining as the poems with pictures of food personified and altered to create a hilarious visual for each poem. I enjoyed the variety of poetry styles presented in the book. Some poems were sonnets, others were limericks. Some used rhythm and rhyme, others were filled with beat.
This poetry collection can be used in the classroom to excite and engage children in learning about poetry. Elements of poetry can easily be taught with this collection because it provides a variety of poems and literary elements of poems. This collection could also be show more used as a model for poetry writing. After reading and studying this collection, students could choose their own food to write about and illustrate. show less
This is a great children's book of food related poetry. It is humourous, sometimes a little bit dark, very silly and is well illustrated. The poems are all about food aversions and obsessions as well as eating habits. I think most children would find these poems amusing, as would any adult who knows first hand about the wonders of childhood eating,
Cute poems addressing foods' feelings about the people who eat them. Poems rhyme and are accompanied by fun illustrations showing the food acting out there wacky adventures that the poems speak about. Poems are a bit gross and extremely fantastical.
As a former picky eater, I think this book is great. So many kids hate certain foods, and this book would be fun to read with them. It the story of these disliked foods, and that maybe they don't like you either. The graphics were great, very colorful, and the words were very well written.
This is a funny book that could be used as a read aloud in a B-2 classroom. I think it would get the whole class involved in the story telling. The children can then go back to their desks for a writing assignment or drawing assignment in the nursery school. The children can write which food they don't like to eat and which one they might give a try. The poem asks what if different foods didn't like different children, just as the children don't like certain foods without trying them. At the end of the book, the foods say that the children should just tey them (the food). The moral is you never know until you try something, you might just like it.
* Book to be used in B-2 classroom setting as a read aloud.
