My Brother Bert

Description

Illustrations and rhyming text portray a hobby gone awry, as Bert's collection of exotic pets seems on the verge of breaking into a quarrel, and perhaps a rumpus, as well.

Take an already amusing children's poem about Bert's out-of-control animal collecting hobby and illustrate it with large, fun, cute paintings and what do you get? An absolute delight! I especially like the rabbits (of which there are many), ostrich chicks and domestic cat but the other animals are also wonderful. Forty pages of joy.
It all started with a mouse, but when Bert's hobby of collecting animals went astray, the next thing you know his room is full of creatures big and small! The pictures are colorful and playful, while the story is in a rhythm. Beware parents of how much your kids collect!
Bert is a messy character who thinks the more the merrier as far as pets. His sister is slightly mortified and slightly intrigued by all of the animals in her brother's room. The weird older brother is an easy thing to relate to, and this book gives a bit more insight into the eccentricities of this one in particular. Love the rhyming!
This wacky rhyming story is told by the sister of a boy who collects animals. She imagines the pandemonium that might be caused by bringing into the house a motley collection of critters. The illustrations go a long way to bringing this brief story to life, showing all the preposterous situations that may well ensue as her brother continues to build his collection. This story is likely to bring out the wild animal in all of us if read aloud in a group. Could be lots of fun!
The story follows a young girl whose brother has a growing pet collection and she imagines just what might happen to her house if he continues to expand his array of animals. Wonderful detail is used to bring the animals to life. A fun book that will attract the interest of any fellow animal lovers.
Because I love animals, I loved this book! The illustrations were soft, yet colorful and funny. On each page you could see the new animals Bert had in his room, and the nonsense they participated in! I would love to have this book in my classroom, it's very fun.
This book is about Bert and his hobby of collecting and keeping different kinds of animals as pets. Bert's sister tells about Bert's hobby. Of course, Bert's love for animals can go out of hand as it did in the story. We see all kinds of animals in the pictures, from elephant to bear and rabbit, you name it.
This book's illustration is in detail and since there is not much text in the book, the illustrations add to the value of the book. The illustrations show the sister in each page and since she is the narrator of the story it makes sense. The illustrations' liveliness brings this feeling that the reader is taking part in the book.

Ted Hughes was born on August 17, 1930 in England and attended Cambridge University, where he became interested in anthropology and folklore. These interests would have a profound effect on his poetry. In 1956, Hughes married famed poet Sylvia Plath. He taught at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst from 1957 until 1959, and he stopped show more writing altogether for several years after Plath's suicide in 1963. Hughes's poetry is highly marked by harsh and savage language and depictions, emphasizing the animal quality of life. He soon developed a creature called Crow who appeared in several volumes of poetry including A Crow Hymn and Crow Wakes. A creature of mythic proportions, Crow symbolizes the victim, the outcast, and a witness to life and destruction. Hughes's other works also created controversy because of their style, manner, and matter, but he has won numerous honors, including the Somerset Maugham Award in 1960, and the Queen's Medal for Poetry in 1974. His greatest honor came in 1984, when he was named Poet Laureate of England. Ted Hughes died in 1998. (Bowker Author Biography) show less
