Description

History of the Britons (Historia Brittonum) is brilliantly translated by J. A. Giles. Nennius felt that teachers were not giving their students a complete history of Briton, so he attempted to write this brief account. His account is quite thorough beginning with. "From Adam to the flood, are two thousand and forty-two years. From the flood of Abraham, nine hundred and forty-two. From Abraham to Moses, six hundred. * From Moses to Solomon, and the first building of the temple, four hundred show more and forty-eight. From Solomon to the rebuilding of the temple, which was under Darius, king of the Persians, six hundred and twelve years are computed. From Darius to the ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the fifteenth year of the emperor Tiberius, are five hundred and forty-eight years. So that from Adam to the ministry of Christ and the fifteenth year of the emperor Tiberius, are five thousand two hundred and twenty-eight years" show less

As far as histories go, it's quite short. However, Nennius packs a lot of detail into his writing. I find myself wanting to read more. Nennius has also given us a detailed account of King Arthur and the battle at Mount Badon. It is important to keep in mind though, that King Arthur may not have been a historical person. This is definitely a very entertaining and complete history, but not necessarily accurate.

Dr. John Morris was actively working on Nennius shortly before his death on 1 June 1977.

Introductory note (R. B. White, Arthurian period sources ed., 1980).
Nennius' SELECT DOCUMENTS (Excerpta) of Early British History is almost unique in ancient and medieval historical writing, both in concept and form and in originality and quality of scholarship.

Introduction... (show all) (John Morris, Arthurian period sources ed., 1980).
I, Nennius, pupil of the holy Elvodug, have undertaken to write down some extracts that the stupidity of the British cast out; for the scholars of the island of Britain had no skill, and set down no record in books.
