Call of the Kiwi

This was the final segment of the series and I just loved it. There were times I was in a dark place because of the events being described but I persevered was rewarded with a marvelous, satisfying, delicious story. This whole series was so interesting, wonderful characters and so well researched. Kudos to Sarah Lark.

The final book of the 'Land of the Long White Cloud' trilogy. In the first book Gwyneira McKenzie arrived in New Zealand as a naïve young bride. Now it's the story of her great-granddaughter Gloria Martyn who was raised by Gwyneria, her husband James and their son Jack on the family sheep farm on the Canterbury Plains, Kiward Station. Gloria's parents send word from Europe that it’s time for her to have a 'proper education' at an English boarding school. Struggling to fit in, Gloria is deeply unhappy, even when her parents take her on tour with them. When she discovers that they never intend to send her home, Gloria takes matters into her own hands. This the third book in the Land of the Long White Cloud series. It takes place in New Zealand and in England where cousins Lillian and Gloria go to boarding school. When War World I breaks out in Europe. Lillian is sent home to New Zealand, and Gloria is to spend the time with her mother and father on tour in America. Gloria only wants to go back to her grandmother Gwyneira's sheep farm in New Zealand Kiward Station, but must join her parents. Finding out that her parents don't have anything for Gloria to do in America she runs away. Back in New Zealand, Gwyneira is worried about Gloria and Gwyneira's son Jack who plans to go in the service. The story comes alive in the trials of Lillian, Gloria, and Jack. They all have struggles and show more terrible situation to cope with before they all return to Kiward Station. show less

This is the final book in a trilogy. I did enjoy the first two books more than this one. The adventure in the first books was wonderful. I really loved the characters. This book was very sad at times. I am the kind of person who wants to read all the books when I start a series. Overall I did enjoy this series.

Gloria Martyn heeft een idyllische jeugd gehad op Kiward Station, de uitgestrekte schapenboerderij van haar familie in de Canterbury Plains. Wanneer haar ouders vanuit Europa laten weten dat het tijd is voor Gloria om een echte "dame" te worden door naar een kostschool aan de andere kant van de wereld in Engeland te gaan, moet Gloria alles en iedereen achterlaten waar ze het meest van houdt, inclusief haar trouwe beschermer Jack McKenzie.
Haar oma besluit om Lilian te vragen of zij mee wil naar het internaat en Lilians ouders vinden dat ook goed.
Lilian heeft het goed naar haar zin maar Gloria is een buitenbeentje op school. Haar gedrag is nogal nukkig en afstandelijk en zij heeft haar uiterlijk ook niet mee. Haar gedrag, gedrongen show more postuur en de Maori trekken zorgen dat ze genegeerd en gepest wordt.
Dan besluiten haar ouders dat Gloria wel naar Amerika kan komen om mee te gaan op tournee. Maar ook daar wordt ze weer aan haar lot overgelaten. Vol heimwee naar Kiward Station gaat ze op weg naar Nieuw Zeeland. De reis is vreselijk en er gebeuren verschrikkelijke en weerzinwekkende dingen met Gloria.
Na een jaar lang vermist te zijn geweest komt de gebroken Gloria daar aan

Ondertussen hebben Roly O’Brien en Jack McKenzie zich aangemeld bij de ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) en daar komen beide mannen getraumatiseerd van terug. Jack en Gloria moeten echt alle mogelijk moeite doen om elkaar weer te leren kennen. Jack heeft wel in de gaten dat Gloria heel heftig reageert op mannen die te dicht bij komen en hij pakt het vreselijk lief en voorzichtig aan terwijl hij zelf ook in het reine moet komen met de herinneringen aan de stranden van Gallipoli.
Prachtig afsluitend deel van deze serie en ik zal zeker nog meer van Sarah Lark lezen. show less
