Il detective che si occupa del caso fin dal primo omicidio si rivolge all'amico psichiatra Matthew Denison anche lui coinvolto nelle indagini per fornire un possibile profilo del killer. La ragazza viene ricoverata e affidata alle cure di Denison, che poco alla volta riesce a riportare Olivia alla realtà.
Il racconto si svolge su due piani: il presente, con le indagini riguardo il terzo omicidio e i colloqui con Olivia; il passato, indicato anche con un diverso carattere tipografico, torna al primo delitto, analizzando le reazioni dei vari personaggi coinvolti.
La narrazione forse all'inizio è un po' confusa e rallentata, ma subito si riprende e trova un ritmo serrato davvero coinvolgente.
Il lettore si trova a presumere l'identità del killer man mano che gli vengono proposti gli indizi: più e più volte si troverà a cambiare idea, con dei colpi di scena che sembrano non finire mai. Forse chi legge Deaver intuirà più facilmente la soluzione dell'enigma: la Newman preferisce un intreccio simile a quelli del collega americano, ma non rischia affatto di sembrarne un clone.
Macabro e crudele, è così avvincente che non si riesce a chiudere il libro prima dell'epilogo. ( )
