Description

In this book of poetry, Kay McKenzie Cooke's theme is one of finding a home in this world - an authentic poetry of place. With a fidelity toward experience, Cooke's gift is capturing people in day-to-day incidental situations and forging poetry out of common speech which she unpretentiously synthesizes with an elemental energy. These poems contain an array of striking images through the passing of seasons, developed from Cooke's exposure, as a child and adolescent, to the wind-whipped show more coastline of Orepuki, New Zealand. Her book, Feeding the Dogs, won the Jessie Mackay Award for best first book of poetry. show less

This is a lovely collection of poems about life, landscape and growing up in the far south of New Zealand. It's intensely evocative for me, because I lived in or visited many of the places Kay McKenzie Cooke writes about during my own childhood and adolescence, but I think this book would appeal to people who don't share these experiences - especially those who grew up in the country, or who enjoy poetry that is sure-footed,thought-provoking, and full of life.
