Art for God's Sake: A Call to Recover the Arts
by Philip Graham Ryken

Description
The creation sings to us with the visual beauty of God's handiwork. But what of man-made art? Much of it is devoid of sacred beauty and is often rejected by Christians. Christian artists struggle to find acceptance within the church. If all of life is to be viewed as "under the lordship of Christ," can we rediscover what Gods plan is for the arts? Philip Graham Ryken brings into sharp focus a biblical view of the arts and the artists who make art for God's sake. This is a concise yet show more comprehensive treatment of the major issue of the arts for all who seek answers. - Publisher. show lessTags

It is hard to evaluate this book according to the author's intended purpose. Certainly, Ryken succeeds in demonstrating the value of art to God and, consequently, the value of art to the people of God. However, this book creates more questions than it answers. What is the difference between art and non-art? Between bad art and good art? How are we to evaluate? Usually, I would not hold it against the author for not discussing that which is outside his stated bounds of inquiry. However, these questions are fundamental to the issue and should have received some consideration to adequately guide the Christian community to adopt a proper stance toward the arts.
Short but powerful!
A short and yet quite thought-provoking read! I liked this especially as a primer to refine my own thinking on the arts and why I write.

This is a good book about the Christian's view of the arts. It is along the same vein as Schaeffer's Art and the Bible. I plan on using the principles he outlined with my 11th grade Omnibus class: Building a Christian Worldview.
