He served as a minister of the Free Church of Scotland in both Glasgow and Edinburgh, and later as principal of New College, Edinburgh. After the Bible, the writings of Puritan Thomas Goodwin were among his favorites. Whyte is most remembered as a powerful preacher. Alexander Whyte, DD, LLD (1836-1921), regarded as the finest preacher of late-Victorian Scotland, was a minister of the United Free Church of Scotland at the church of St. George's at Edinburgh from 1870-1916, and was the principal of New College at Edinburgh from 1909-1918.
