5th - that is: second last - book in Lin Carter's THONGOR saga and well worth reading if you have nothing better to do at the time. Short enough not to overstay its welcome. The appendix describing where Carter allegedly got his inspiration from is absolutely fantastic and probably rates 5 Star. No kidding.
Book 5 in the Thongor series. Follows Thongor In The City Of Magicians, followed by Thongor Fights The Pirates Of Tarakus.

The 5th Thongor novel opens with the 'death' of Thongor at the sorcerous hands of Mardanax who subsequently takes control of Thongor's widow Sumia for control of Patanga.

Two plotlines are followed, Thongor loyalist Charn Thovis rescues Prince Thar from the clutches of Mardanax but again the Lemurian flying boat proves susceptible to attack from a passing pterodactyl leaving Thovis and Thar in the hands of the pirates of Tarakus who as is usual for Carter's pirates adhere to the common stereotype.

The other plotline follows Thongor's passage through what may or not be the Afterlife, culminating in an encounter with show more Father Gorm himself with whom Thongor shares a fairly corny philosophical exchange.

Once again the flying boats save the day and Thongor's timely return to the land of the living tidies up the loose ends.

A fascinating appendix describes how Carter supposedly derived the Thongor saga from the Upa-Puranas of Vedic mythology. However this essay is completely bogus with entirely fictional source material cited as the series inspiration.
