Book 4 in the Thongor series. Follows Thongor Against The Gods, followed by Thongor At The End Of Time.
Thongor continues his quest to progressively purge Lemuria of its various baddies. With the Dragon Kings and the Druids dispatched in instalments two and three, now Thongor must face the Black Magicians of Zaar led by Mardanax.Once again the story opens with the baddies hatching their plot and once again mystical assistance puts the hero on their trail as the gods themselves come to Thongor in a dream to tell him of the looming threat.
This is probably the best of the Thongor series for what's it's worth. Carter's signature structure of dealing with parallel plotlines in isolation before bring them together by way of some amazing show more coincidence is perfected in this effort.
Once again Thongor is reliant on outside help to get him out of a jam. Conan never needed flying boats, lightning guns, indigo giants or Crom himself to extricate himself out of a tight situation but Carter falls back on his treasured plot devices again and again to make his job a little easier.
The magicians of Zaar meet a grisly end except for Mardanax himself who lives to fight another day. show less
