Summary: Black Beauty is a horse that goes through many masters and lifestyles. Some of the masters are kind and gentle others are cruel and mean. Black Beauty tells the story of the horse's own long and varied life, from a well-born colt in a pleasant meadow to an elegant carriage horse for a gentleman to a painfully overworked cab horse.

Personal Reaction: I loved this story as a kid. It made me laugh and cry. It gave me a new respect for animals and what they bring to a persons life.

Classroom Extensions:
1)This book is ultimately about learning how the treat people and animals. All children must participate in creating a pledge on how to be kind to others.
2)Kids will help make rules about not bullying and what happens when someone bullies another student.
3)Kids will learn to help their neighbor

Summary: Black Beauty was written by Cathy East. This classic follows the story of the remarkable Black Beauty, who spent his whole life working almost non-stop for the sake of his one-too-many masters. Injured by one, cared for by another, Black Beauty has been through it all. The majority of the story goes into depth about how horses were treated back in the 1800s--how the bearing rein slowly and painfully injured them, how most cab drivers forced the horses to pull heavy carts, how they were overworked. Black Beauty keeps trying his best to please his masters and longs for a pleasent life. Despite all the rough patches, Black Beauty finds the home of his dreams in the end.

Personal: This was my favorite book growing up. I loved horses and Black Beauty is my all time favorite horse. This story brought many emotions to me even as an adult. I still cry when black beauty is being mistreated. The book really teaches children alot. It shows them how you should and shouldnt treat animals. This book can bring out different emotions in a child over what is happening to this animal.

Extension Idea: This is a chapter book whisch should be read by third grade and older.
You could use this book in a classroom to teach about animal cruelty.
