The three Greshams (Julia, Henry & Amy) were prim, correct Victorian children, ruled by 'what other people might think'. The two Holts (Richard & Kate) were quite different. They read at the table, ate sweets between meals and swung on their front gate. Richard decides to take the Greshams in hand and so he invents 'The Society for the Achieving of Greatness, Broadening of Horizons, Enlarging of Ideas, and the Cultivating of Independent Minds'. Excitement and chaos follow, and the Greshams' lives will never be quite the same.
