Fraught with insular military ineptness and its tragic consequences “A Regimental Affair” by Allan Mallinson is a good addition to the chronicles of 19th century Dragoon Mathew Hervey. However, I didn’t enjoy this novel as much as Mr. Mallinson’s previous Hervey installments. This was most probably due to the overabundance of recurrent tit-for-tat machinations of shallow military personnel and administrative shenanigans as opposed to the usual battlefield glory. On the other hand, Mr. Mallinson moves the story arc along at a dutiful clip and closes Hervey’s Canadian adventure with a peripeteia, while not unforeseen, was a shocker nonetheless. And it will be enjoyable to read where Mr. Mallison will take Hervey now that tragedy show more has struck. show less
