On the morning of your birthday, a bunch of monsters show up at your door! They aren't scary but they aren't kind either ... they make a mess of the house, eat all your cake, and abscond with your presents. Now what kind of birthday is that?
This is a fun title that will appeal to fans of Sandra Boynton as it has her signature humor and illustration style. In some ways, it reminds me a little of The Cat in the Hat in that uninvited guests show up and wreak havoc, alongside a little bit of fun. All's well that ends well here as the hippo protagonist ends up with some birthday treats after all. Young readers will enjoy reading this energetic title on their birthday -- or any other day for that matter.

The Birthday Monsters throw a chaotic and disastrous party for a dazed hippopotamus. Thank goodness for the twist ending setting things aright.
This particular book was a present for my daughter's very first birthday and has been revisited regularly over the last two decades.

I feel like all I do is review Sandra Boynton books lately. This is another new one that we bought for our daughter's birthday, and at first I didn't like it as much as some of our favorites. The text isn't as smooth, it doesn't roll off my tongue like the writing in Snuggle Puppy or Pajama Time. The first time I read it I was disappointed. After my daughter started asking for the monster book at bedtime, my feelings changed. I had to get a few good readings and learn where to embellish with sound effects and songs, and now it's a much more fun read. I still can't compare the writing to some of her other stories, it's just not as lyrical; but it is a fun story, and my girl likes it, which is good enough for me.
Despite being a board book, it's got a plot! The monsters are a lot of fun, and my 1-year-old grandson just loves the book! (We did a bit of a monster theme for him...)
I love Boynton and have for decades now, and this is a really fun addition to her board books for the little ones!

This is one of our favorite books.
The chaos caused by the monsters (more sensitive kids might get upset, I suppose, but my nieces don't) is done in a funny way, and the fact that the BIRTHDAY MONSTER CLEANING CREW! fixes everything at the end makes it all better.
Very catchy text, really funny illustrations. Perfect for a kid's first or second birthday.

Another fun Sandra Boynton, this one birthday-themed. Recommended for SB fans.

Sandra Boynton was born in Orange, New Jersey, and grew up in the Mount Airy section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Boynton's parents became Quakers when she was two years old. From kindergarten through 12th grade, she and her sisters attended Germantown Friends School, where their father taught English and was Head of the Upper School. She went show more on to Yale, entering in 1970 for her second year of college. She spent the second semester of her junior year studying in Paris through Wesleyan University's program. At Yale, she majored in English. Boynton intended to become a theater director. For graduate studies in drama, she attended the University of California at Berkeley for one year, then transferred to the Yale School of Drama D.F.A. program, but she did not complete the program. With the birth of her first child in 1979, Boynton postponed indefinitely a career in the theater. Boynton began designing greeting cards for Recycled Paper Greetings. Her designs were at the forefront of the Alternative Cards commercial movement that began in the mid-1970s. According to RPG co-founder and president Mike Keiser, over 200 million copies of Boynton's distinctive humorous cards featuring an assortment of unnamed cartoon animal characters, spare layout, and droll messages sold between 1973 and 1995. Since the 1977 release of Hippos Go Berserk!, Boynton has published many children's books, as well as several illustrated humor books for the general market. Her books are most typically for very young children, offered in the laminated paperboard format known as board books. Five of her books have been New York Times best sellers: Chocolate: The Consuming Passion; Frog Trouble and Eleven Other Pretty Serious Songs; Yay, You!; Consider Love; and Philadelphia Chickens, which reached the number one position on the list, and was on the list for nearly a year. Two of her books are Publisher's Weekly bestsellers, Dinosaur Dance!, and Eek! Halloween!. Three of Boynton's books are on the Publishers Weekly All-Time Bestselling Children's Books list. More than 30 million copies of her books have been sold. (Bowker Author Biography) show less
