Phantasmagoria and Other Poems

Description

Today, Lewis Carroll is best remembered as a writer of juvenile fiction responsible for such timeless works as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. However, Carroll was also a poet who wove dark visions and supernatural themes into his substantial body of work. Much of the verse collected in Phantasmagoria and Other Poems has a supernatural or visionary theme. A must-read for fans of Victorian ghost stories.

Phantasmagoria and Other Poems is a short collection of poetry of Lewis Carroll, better known as the author of Alice in Wonderland. This collection contains the long poem "Phantasmagoria" (a whimsical, light-hearted ghost story told in verse) as well as a number of other shorter poems (all light in tone, many humorous). I did not find any of the poems as appealing as "Jabberwocky" or "The Walrus and the Carpenter" or any of Carroll's other poems that I was already familiar with. Honestly, none of them really stood out to me. "Phantasmagoria" was probably my favourite, as it contained both a stronger narrative element and the elements of fantasy and whimsy that I associate with Carroll's work. Overall, I was glad to have the opportunity show more to read some of Carroll's lesser-known work but this is probably not a book I would recommend. show less

I found this little gem at a garage sale a week before Halloween. I approached it with high hopes that synchronicity was at play. The poem "Phantasmagoria" - said to be Carroll's longest - unfortunately was more whimsical than mysterious. I got very little out of the other poems. Illustrations were interesting, but overall, I was disappointed. Understandable why this is not one of Lewis Carroll's better known works.
Mint Editions take classic books and modernize the fonts and covers. Best of all, they don‘t print a book until you order it because they want to save natural resources.
The poems included in this collection are pretty whimsical. My favorite was Phantasmagoria, dark and funny with a twist at the end.
Mint Editions would be a nice gift for a fan of the classics!

At times clever and witty in what most would recognize as Carroll's forte, this volume overall doesn't live up to his better known poetry.

An absolutely charming collection of poems by Lewis Carroll; best known for his Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass books. I especially enjoyed his Phantasmagoria, Poeta Fit, Non Nascitur, and Fame's Penny-Trumpet. Thoroughly recommended for lovers of poetry and for those who enjoyed Alice in Wonderland and the variety of little poems he sneaks into that book as well.

Well. I guess there's a reason everyone knows the jabberwocky and no one knows these. The title piece is fun, and worth a read, but the rest varies between bitter, flat, and both bitter and flat.
