I thought this book was amazing! Maybe because it talked about one my favorite individuals ever, however, I would recommend this book to all my classmates as a chapter book! The book was divided into many chapters and went beyond the typical biography. Berne, found a way to incorporate todays society, history and Helen's life into one story. For example, on page 7 they talk about Helen being raised deaf and blind, on page 8 they talk deaf-blindeness today and how it differs from Helen's era. I enjoyed that Berne, told the perspective from multiple characters such as her sister, mother, father and teacher Annie. Berne did not hide the truth about the struggle and hardships that Helen faced. Instead, he made this an honest book. In the beginning of the book, Berne talks about how dangerous Helen was because she would do bad things when she didn't get her way. For example, when she was home with just her mother she locked her mother in the kitchen pantry for three hours. While still talking about the hardship and trouble, Berne made sure to focus on the success Helen was making as a person who was deaf and blind. In the book they included multiple pictures that were really helpful, they showed sign language poster, braille, Helen's house, Helen's college and many many more. Also, they included a timeline at the beginning of the book of all the major events in Helen's life. At the end of the novel there was a glossary for the bolded terms throughout the novel. I really enjoyed this book! ( )
