Sarah Tieck gives us a better look at first daughters, Sasha and Malia Obama. We are taken through their journey of becoming the first daughters, and their lives leading up this event. The girls grew up in Illinois, and were raised in a working family. Both of their parents were lawyers, so they knew what hard-work looked like. In 2007 their dad, Barack Obama, wanted to become the president of the United States. This started their journey on the campaign trail, and it was a very busy time for the Obamas. Barack won the election, becoming the first African American president, and their lives changed forever. They moved to the White House, and even started a new school. Though they were becoming more and more famous, their parents kept them grounded by having them do chores around the house (the White House that is). Malia and Sasha are just normal kids, and we are shown that in this book.

I never realized how important it is to have biographies on kids! Again, I always had biographies in this box of "dead people" and "old people". I never thought about biographies on the many successful young people in this world. I loved how this book was set-up, and how easy it was to read. Each page had a picture that went along with the facts we were reading about, and it all flowed so well. Students will be able to relate to this biography because it is about kids that are just like them. At the end of the book we are given a glossary because the book introduces some tough vocabulary. I also enjoyed how the book talked about other first children, and how they wrote letters to Sasha and Malia to give them advice on being the president's daughters. I would love to compose a project on the different children in history because I have a feeling there are a lot I do not know about, and I think it would be fun to learn about. ( )

Summary: This book gives general information of President Barack Obama's dauReghters Sasha and Malia.

Reaction: I enjoyed learning about President Obama's daughters. I am glad that they are have to do chores like most other American children.

Extension: This is a good book for a History class or just for learning what is happening in the White House in present day America.

This book was not my favorite. I do like the pictures of the daughters and how they author gives one facts about them, but I just simply didn't find this book very meaningful. I think this book focuses more on small irrelevant facts about the girls and white house, rather than having an inside look of their daily lives. I was disappointed because I thought I was going to have a better understanding of their lives and not little things about them as first daughters. I would't use this book in my classroom. ( )

This book was okay. It just talked about their lives as daughters of the president. ( )

About the daughters of President Obama. The daughter's lives has changed since they moved in the White House. It gave some "did you know" facts about them. ( )
